American Songbook

Doug Schmolze

With his stirring tenor voice and classy guitar accompaniments Doug brings the American Songbook to new life. His repertoire includes songs from the 1920’s, 30’s, 40’s and 50’s with a few surprises. Composers such as Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin and Roger and Hammerstein are represented in programs tailored to concert hall, cabaret and educational venues. His stories and anecdotes bring historical context and humor to his performances. There are opportunities for audience participation in his revival of the old-time sing-a-long tradition.

“Doug Schmolze was a huge hit at our Memory Café! Our audience—who comprised many ages—were impressed and delighted by his lovely voice and guitar skills, his engaging personality, and the fascinating anecdotes he provided about the music of the ‘Boom or Bust’ era. The audience members were smiling, clapping, and tapping their feet the entire time! One participant even inquired about hiring him privately. I would highly recommend Doug for a Council on Aging or Senior Center performance- he will not disappoint.”

“I have had the pleasure of working with Doug at two different facilities for residents with Alzheimer’s Disease. He is in a league of his own. His repertoire is extensive and appeals to all tastes, ranging from opera to American standards. If he doesn’t know a song that’s requested, he will learn it and have it ready the next time he comes. He has sung for us in Italian, Portuguese, and Yiddish! His manner is supremely professional and his trained voice and skillful playing are wonderful. We dance, we sing along, we listen raptly and happily await his return.”
